Surgical Services

Adana Veterinary Clinic provides lifetime care for your pet. We focus on preventive care and owner education for the care of kittens/puppies through adulthood and into senior years. We also provide preventative veterinary care (annual wellness examinations and laboratory screening as appropriate for the species) for all types of exotic pets. In addition to preventative care, we provide medical care for sick and injured cats, dogs and exotic pets. Adana has an in-house laboratory for most testing, digital X-ray and a small ultrasound machine to assist our experienced doctors in reaching a diagnosis quickly. All the staff are educated to be gentle and understanding of our patients, doing our very best to make every pet feel comfortable with us. Dr. Wildenstein has over 30 years of experience in examining and interpreting the signs in pets, she understands the importance in listening to the concerns of the owner.

Our pharmacy carries most medications and preventives for cats, dogs and furry exotic pets, allowing you to start using the prescribed medicine as soon as you get home.

Surgeries

We have surgery days at Adana weekly, and offer a wide range of soft-tissue surgeries: routine spay and neuter, C-sections, various abdominal procedures (including bladder surgery, intestinal foreign body removal, splenectomy, to name a few). Externally we perform eyelid surgeries (entropion correction, eyelid mass removals), laceration or wound-repair and tumor (mass) removal. For dental surgeries please refer to that section. All of our surgical patients are examined before the surgery. They will receive pain medication pre- and post their procedure to keep them comfortable. Most pets also go home with pain medications for the recovery period.

Please be advised that for ethical reasons we do not perform tail-docking unless medically warranted (i.e. related to trauma) and have never performed declawing of cats (per 2019 this is fortunately illegal in NY State). We are happy to help discuss methods and training to avoid unwanted, destructive scratching in your home.

Anesthesia

Anesthesia is very safe for your pet at Adana as we have a very individualized approach to the drugs used. Each pet is different: temperament, age, and health-wise, which may affect the choice of medication. We use a high tech anesthesia delivery system, thorough monitoring of vital signs, and are very attentive to keeping the animal’s body temperature in it’s normal range while under anesthesia. All of these features assist in the safest possible experience and recovery for your pet.

When pets are to be anesthetized they are first given an injection of “pre-medication” drugs. This may include a tranquilizer, pain medication, and drugs to control salivation and heart rate under anesthesia. The tranquilizer ensures a smooth induction into the anesthesia plane as well as a smooth recovery. Once sedate, an injectable anesthetic is given into the bloodstream; the pet becomes unconscious and an endotracheal tube is inserted into the trachea. The endotracheal tube is hooked up to our anesthesia unit. Our anesthesia unit, ADS 1000, is a high-tech computerized anesthesia delivery system. Most veterinary facilities use a regular unit that relies on the pet to breathe by itself under anesthesia. Not getting enough oxygen under anesthesia is one of the highest risk factors for complications.

At Adana the ADS 1000 assures extremely safe anesthesia. The unit is also a ventilator and will give oxygen at regular intervals (based on the weight of the pet), if the animal does not breathe by itself. It delivers anesthesia gas, isoflurane, in precisely measured amounts according to the specific weight of the pet.

While the pet is “under,” we use various monitoring equipment to assure the animal is safe while anesthetized. Our Cardell monitor continuously displays heart rate and oxygen levels in the blood as well as measures blood pressure. An esophageal probe measures body temperature. We use a warm air heating unit to wrap around the animal’s body to keep a normal body temperature. The ability to control temperature is depressed when under anesthesia and if the pet gets cold recovery, will take much longer. An IV catheter is placed for many procedures and fluids are administered using an IV pump which helps maintain normal blood pressure while the pet is anesthetized.

At Adana we do our utmost to assure our patients have a safe anesthesia experience. Most patients are able to stand, walk, eat, and drink in the afternoon after a morning procedure. Patients usually can safely go home that same day.

Post-op therapeutic laser treatment

At Adana Veterinary Clinic we have long believed in the amazing abilities of Class IV Laser Treatment used on surgery sites to decrease the patient’s post operative pain.
